Bulgaria is ranked among the countries with the most affordable living expenses: the cost of living there is way below the levels for the rest of Europe. Some food products, beverages and cigarettes in Bulgaria are still relatively cheaper than those in other EU/EEA Member States, which is an added advantage and makes the cost of living more affordable.
Bulgaria adopted the Euro on 1 January 2026.
Currency can be exchanged in banks or in any of the country’s many currency exchange offices. Some of these exchange offices also work on holidays. Euro-cheques can be exchanged in banks.
Most Bulgarian stores now accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club credit cards.
