Iceland has eight higher education institutions, the largest of which is the University of Iceland. The higher education institutions can also be divided into groups according to their specialisation: there are agricultural institutions, academies of the arts and institutions offering wide ranges of studies.

All higher education institutions in the country accredited by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture follow the National Qualification Framework. According to the framework, there are three subsequent cycles of higher education: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s and Doctorate degree.
Graduate studies at master’s level entail a study programme of six months to two years, while Doctorate degree is a course of study covering three to four years. In the country, only three higher education institutions award a third cycle degree: University of Iceland, University of Reykjavik and the Agricultural University of Iceland.
