Exploring the country
Did you know that Iceland is known as “the land of fire and ice”?
The country is home to some of the world’s most active volcanoes and to some of the largest glaciers in Europe. Iceland is truly an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise and it has an enormous creative output.
Two of its Natural parks (Þingvellir and Vatnajökull National Park) are inscribed on the World Heritage List and also the volcanic island of Surtsey is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Iceland is also part of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. The routes are an invitation to travel and to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Europe by bringing people and places together in networks of shared history and heritage. They cover a range of different themes, from architecture and landscape to religious influences, from gastronomy and intangible heritage to the major figures of European art, music and literature.
