In Italy you can have two main types of traineeships, curricular (tirocini curriculari) and non-curricular (tirocini formativi). Curricular traineeships are a part of your studies, can last from two to twelve months and for them the university provides insurance so interns are covered during their stay abroad. 

Non-curricular traineeships are the ones which are not a part of studies and students will not get credits for it. They are also summer traineeships and traineeships for foreign candidates. 

They are active policy measures aimed at enabling individuals to gain practical work experience in order to build their professional skills, improve their employability and enrich their curriculum. In addition, special categories of traineeships are established under national law to access specific professions.

The national guidelines establish common principles, adopted and implemented at regional level, and provide for three main categories of non-curricular traineeships:

• Guidance and traineeships for new holders of a qualification/certificate/title, within 12 months of obtaining their qualification; maximum duration: 6 months
• Traineeships for integration or reintegration into the labour market, targeted at the unemployed (including those on mobility lists or accessing common social safety nets) and inactive people; maximum duration: 12 months
• Guidance/training, integration/reintegration traineeships for specific target groups (disadvantaged groups such as people with disabilities or asylum seekers); maximum duration: 12 to 24 months
