Job market

Generally, in Portugal there remains a strong presence of job opportunities in professional services, especially for Portuguese speakers. But in recent years, the surge of international companies establishing operations in Portugal has significantly expanded options for expats.
The most popular types of jobs in Portugal include tourism and hospitality-related work (restaurants, customer service, resorts and hotels). However, there’s been a notable uptick in IT and tech-sector jobs: software development, data, automation, and digital technology are seeing strong growth.

Remote work is also increasingly common: positions in customer support, software development, content creation, and more are available for remote or hybrid roles.

For vacancies offered by business support centres and shared services centres, knowledge of Portuguese is not necessary, since the working languages are English and the native languages. In other positions, language skills in Portuguese are essential, particularly in jobs requiring contact with the public.
